This was probably the most eye-opening piece of enlightenment I've ever read. I've been casually practicing for awhile now but I kinda hit a brick wall. I've gotten down a few basic moves (arm/body wave, gliding, simple tuts, hitting, some ticking, footwork) but I can't actually DANCE for shit. I'll put on a track and get down and it's just not coming together.

My problem is basically what you've addressed here, I've been all over the place instead of just focusing on one thing and mastering it. I’m a lot like you when you started out Otis - it doesn't come naturally so I’ve really got to work on the fundamentals. I’ve been studying your youtube vids religiously, and I will say you’re a damn good teacher and an inspiration for us less rhythmically gifted. I would’ve probably given up if not for you. You pinpointed exactly why I wasn’t getting any better and have given me an idea of what I need to do to move forward. Much respect for providing some hope that even us white boys can get down if we practice the right way.

Right now my hitting and timing needs serious work, because like a lot of my Caucasian counterparts, this godamn racial handicap that makes it hard to stay on beat and ride the rhythm. You helped me realize I need to just Fresno like a fiend until I get down basic hitting and timing. Right now, I just look like a complete asshole whenever I see it on camera so I'm obviously not ready to move forward yet.

The dude whose style I really dig is Poppin DS. This clip below is the clip that I watch over and over and would punch a baby in the face to be able to mimic, especially his second round performance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P82tHyO3Yqc

He's got ridiculous control and timing and he's got this funky radonmness that I’m bent on getting a grasp of. But anyway, thanks a lot for helping me realize I just need to be patient and take it one step at a time.

Another great post. I look at popping like Martial arts. First you practice to get one good punch then one good kick then one good throw, THEN you combine those elements. Finding out what your dance/hero/icons do best, ie isolation, crazy legs, etc. and then focusing on THAT is a lot more productive and SMART than trying to copy them move for move. Personally, I like Boppin Andres, dimestops and simplicity. He never seems in a hurry to get anywhere, doesnt go from move to move in a stacatto fashion, and yet looks dope. I practice THAT a lot. At the same time, I love how Tiger can flow from one move to the next like water using the craziest combinations and patterns. I STILL dont know how he does it, but I want to get it! Finally, I love hot Boogaloo Sam doesnt seem to break a sweat when he pops. Sam pops almost casually. With precision and cool. I mean, the dude is dancing in a three piece suit and doesnt want to get it sweated up. So much to learn, but I can fro concentrate on ONE of my heroes FIRST.... which one? Which one? decisions.... decisions......
