Hello everyone, welcome to my show… At the advice of my great friend Hari Bhajan, I have decided to start a semi-regular newsletter-style e-mail/blog as a way to let all of the great people who I have come to know up-to-date with what is going on in my life…
The first thing to get out of the way is the name issue… A lot of you, or at least some of you, know me primarily as Otis or Otis Funkmeyer… This has gotten increasingly confusing for me and others so I am headed toward just going by Brit to everyone for my own peace-of-mind… But just let it be known that Otis is Brit… and Brit is Otis…
So, on to bigger and better things…
I have just graduated from college. I received a B.A. in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Popping (streetdancers continue the march on academia) from the distance-learning university I attended, Vermont College, which is the greatest place on Earth, both for getting a degree and growing as a human being… I feel incredibly grateful for the experience that I had there and for those of you who don’t yet have a degree, I could not recommend anything I have ever done or bought more than this school, so please, let me make my 5% commission on your tuition and check it out
The way that the school works is that you make your own independent-study each semester and go do it… For this semester, I did a studio study on creating a one-man show. My final product, “Bite, Scratch, Claw: A Divine Love Story” (for those of you who saw it, please e-mail if you think you have a better title), was a huge success and I am very excited for it’s future…
The show is one hour in length and is primarily autobiographical in nature… It combines dancing and monologue rather seamlessly to give a sense of how dance has been my avenue of growth.. The topics covered include race, sexuality, spirituality, self-acceptance/awareness, and my attempt to struggle (or bite, scratch, and claw) slowly but surely toward God…
The response to the show was incredible as I had hoped it would be and I feel that within two years the show will be ready to make very big moves in the realm of theater…
I am currently back in Maine for about another month-and-a-half, when I will head to the Middle East for about 2 months… I was accepted on a program that gives descendents of Jews a free trip to Israel for 2 weeks and I will be able to extend my trip very cheaply which will allow me to stay for another 6 weeks, when I will visit Egypt and Jordan… I am excited about this trip, especially to be in the birthplace of Western religion, so that I can see up close and personal what is what… I feel this is important both for my own spiritual journey and also because of the quagmire we seem to be in in the world…
Then, I think it’s back to Los Angeles, North Hollywood in particular, where I’m going to try to get things going… taking dance and acting classes, trying to get my show out there, street performing, teaching dance, creating a popping event, just trying to make things happen…
Finally, I want to just let you all know that I love you very much and am incredibly grateful for your place in my life…
So I will probably write more frequently during my trip in the Middle East, so until then, welcome to me…
…AND GOD BLESS YOU ONE AND ALL!
Brit
